Free access to quality information became my interest as soon I started working in a library about ten years ago. The Internet offers a plethora of free, quality information but it is difficult and time-consuming to discover them. Open archives and digital libraries try to overcome these impediments by offering specialized and organized free quality information to everybody. Therefore, I am very interested in any aspect of such initiatives. The Digital Collection internship offers me a chance to learn practically about digital libraries, the Open Archive Initiative, and a way to develop practical skills in information evaluation and management. To follow my interest in developing collections with free access, I will participate in the Digital Library of Information Science and Technology (DLIST) Internship.

Goals of the Internship

  • To create a collection development policy for DLIST. I will study and analyze other collection development policies to create a policy for DLIST, and then evaluate the correspondence of the existent collection with the new created policy. The policy will be created by 9/30/05, and the evaluation results will be posted on the progress page.
  • To create a comprehensive pathfinder for the Cataloging subject. To be created by 10/30/05 and linked here.
  • To locate available digital resources for Cataloging subject and create preliminary metadata for them. The progress will be periodically posted here. Finalized by 12/1/05.
  • To achieve a better understanding of the structure, organization, and development of Digital Collections. A special attention will be given to Open Archive Initiative. A OAI webliography including other OAI projects will be posted here. Finalized by 12/1/05.
  • To develop skills in the use of HTML and metadata, as well as to develop information evaluation and management skills. These may be measured by periodic posting on progress page as well as the Final Report that will be published by 12/1/05.
