DLIST Privacy Statement
DLIST (Digital Library of Information Science and Technology) is committed to respecting the privacy of those who visit our websites, and those who choose to subscribe or register for sharing information. We have created this privacy policy to show our commitment to privacy.
What this Privacy Policy Covers
This privacy policy explains our handling of any personally identifiable information (e.g. first and last names, email address, institution or affiliation) that DLIST may hold. You may visit any DLIST webpage without identifying who you are, or revealing personally identifiable information. Any personally identifiable information DLIST obtains about a user of its websites, services, or search systems is information supplied voluntarily by the user as part of using a particular website, or in requesting information from DLIST. DLIST is not responsible for the privacy practices of non-DLIST websites, services or organizations to which a DLIST webpage may link, refer, or recommend.
Information Gathered by DLIST
Registration is not required for general viewing of archived materials. All contributions must be entered by a registered user. The registration process asks for a unique user name, the first and last name of the indivdual, an email address, department, organization, physical address, country, operating system and homepage. Of this information, only a user name, first and last name, and email address are required. Additionally, DLIST will record your computer's IP address, in order to statistically guage use, as well as your ISP in order to determine the user's country of origin and academic or commercial affiliations.
Sharing of Information
At this time, DLIST only uses the personal information that you provide in order to record and support your activities within DLIST websites and web-based services. At this time, DLIST does not sell, rent, or share any personal information that it collects on its webpages. DLIST reserves the right, however, to change this policy, and will give you sufficient notice prior to doing so to allow you to “opt-in” to having your information shared. DLIST will disclose your personal information if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal processes served to you, DLIST, or the site. We will do this in compliance with the ALA's Library Bill of Rights and with the ALA's Interpretation as it pertains to Privacy. It is the policy of DLIST to not identify which materials are deposited by whom in our repositories. However, OAI compliant EPrints Archives use a shared code for metadata tags (e.g., "date," "author," "title," "journal" etc.). This material is then shared through a harvesting process. DLIST cannot guarantee the protection or confidentiality of materials deposited, as viewed through global collections.
General Use of Websites and Services
DLIST webpages and DLIST search and discovery systems maintain raw log files of documents retrieved and search queries entered. Information extracted from these log files (e.g. the pages requested, the user's IP address, estimation of a user session, result sets from search queries) is processed in aggregate to help DLIST gauge the effectiveness of its webpages, improve the performance and structure of its webpages, and for generating general use statistics. DLIST may share this type of information with its collaborators, sponsors and contractors to evaluate and improve the site.
Persistent Identifiers
In order to use some DLIST services, a user may be required to have a persistent identifier (e.g. a login identifier.) These identifiers may link to personally identifiable information the user supplies DLIST as part of registering or signing up for a service. Statistical log files do not correlate personally identifiable information with specific webpages viewed. Personally identifiable information will not be linked to general use information except when a user has volunteered to participate in an evaluation study of library use.
