Bibliography of the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, 1984-Present

Version 5 (Last Updated: 4 June, 2006)

Document URL: http://dlist.sir.arizona.edu/1140/

Scope and Coverage: The bibliography is a comprehensive list of articles, book reviews, conference papers, and columns, published in the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science Education (JELIS) from vol. 25 (3) Summer 1984 to the present Vol. 47 (1), Winter 2006.

Arrangement and Limitations: There are two parts. Part I is comprehensive and has 805 references with the entries arranged alphabetically by author last name. The entries are citations, open access availability of full-text is noted, but abstracts, descriptors, and keywords denoting the subject of the document references are not included. Part II is not comprehensive. That is, not all the references in Part I are included and approximately 100 of them, for some years such as 2005 and 2006 are missing. Parts two is an attempt to produce an author-title-subject bibliography and it includes 1781 entries with the citation along with abstract, descriptors and keywords, when available, the first time it occurs.

Size: The print version is 342 pages (double-spaced, PDF) and approximately 358 pages (HTML).

Full-text open access, free: JELIS articles from the 1996 issues (vol. 37, nos. 1- 4) for which author permissions were received (n=18) are available in dLIST, an open access archive for the information sciences. A few recent JELIS preprints (n=2) are also online.  Online availability (URLs) is noted for all these references (total n=20) in Part I only.   They are also easily accessible under the Library and Information Science Education subject at http://dlist.sir.arizona.edu/view/subjects/lise.html. Furthermore, detailed usage statistics for each can be seen ( View Eprint Statistics hyperlink).

Full-text, electronic access by paid subscription: JELIS articles from the Summer/Fall 2003 (vol. 44, no.3/4) onwards are available in H.W. Wilson subscription databases. This includes full-text Adobe *.pdf and *.html formats for approximately 82 articles. WilsonSelect Plus (n=65) and Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select (n=82) are two of the databases that provide access. Unfortunately, besides requiring a paid subscription, the search keys that provide access to the full-texts in the databases expire within a week. Hence, they have not been included in the bibliography. Wilson does not support Document Object Identifiers (DOI); for example, clicking on this DOI 10.1002/asi.10090 accesses the full-text article page in Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. Neither is there support for Open URLs, http://www.niso.org/committees/committee_ax.html.

About the journal: JELIS (ISSN: 0748-5786) is a publication of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), Vol. 25 (3)-present (1984-present).  JELIS started as the Journal of Education for Librarianship (JEL, ISSN: 0022-0604), Vol. 1-25 (2), 1960-1984, and was the official publication of the Association of American Library Schools (AALS).

When it began as a quarterly journal with the Summer 1960 issue, JEL replaced three association publications: the Reports of the Meeting of the Association of American Library Schools, the AALS Newsletter, and the AALS Directory

The following have served as JELIS editors during the last 60 years:

·        1960 – 1964, Harold Lancour

·        1964 – 1971, William Katz

·        1971 – 1976, Norman Horrocks

·        1976 – 1980, Lucille Wert

·        1980 – 1988, Charles Patterson

·        1988 – 1995, Rosemary DuMont

·        1995 – 2004, Joseph Mika and Ronald Powell

The current editors of the journal are both from the University of Arizona and are Cheryl Knott Malone and Anita Coleman, January 2005-present.

The current JELIS Editorial Board members are:

·        Lynda Baker (Wayne State University, USA)

·        Diane Barlow (University of Maryland, USA)

·        Ann Curry (University of British Columbia, USA)

·        Andrew Dillon (University of Texas, USA)

·        Christopher S.G. Khoo (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)

·        John V. Richardson, Jr. (University of California at Los Angeles, USA)

Since 2003 JELIS is printed by DesTech Publications, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1959 the circulation of the journal, which includes subscriptions as a benefit of ALISE membership as well as library subscriptions was about 400, increasing by 1973 to 1,936, and falling to 1,001 in mid-2005. The home page of the journal is http://www.alise.org/publications/jelis.html.

Acknowledgments: Thanks to Andrew Dillon for the original idea to enable greater use of JELIS articles by making them easily available for course reading lists.  Thanks to John V. Richardson, Jr. for his enthusiastic and prompt feedback on various drafts – it has made the JELIS bibliography more user-friendly. Thanks to Cheryl Knott Malone and Donald Davis for providing me with print copies of JELIS issues – verifying the references was much faster with a copy in hand.

Version history of this bibliography. Version 1: The first draft listed 830 references, unnumbered and with miscellaneous errors.  Version 2: References were numbered and open access availability of full-text added.  Version 3: The first twenty-five references in earlier versions (which had no authors) were removed. The font was changed to Times New Roman (size 12).  Version 4: Spelling errors and capitalization was corrected and the entries for about 130 book reviews were deleted. Version 5: The entries for book reviews were reinstated and some capitalization errors fixed. Part Two, an author, title, subject bibliographical index has been added. Index terms and keywords are those assigned by commercial indexing services.
